The winner of the 2018 Alternative Nobel prize in literature (the New Academy Prize) takes place in 1787 Segu, a Malian kingdom that became the capital of the Bambara Empire. Based on actual events, the book launched the Guadalopean author to prominence and was hailed as the “most significant novel about black Africa published in many a year” by The New York Times Book Review.
