Ali and Nino
Originally published in German in 1937, the Azerbaijani classic has since been published in 30 languages and is sometimes called the country’s national novel. Against the backdrop of the capital of Baku on the eve of the Bolshevik revolution, a Muslim Azerbaijani boy and Christian Georgian princess fall in love against the odds. The book and the author (whose true identity has never been confirmed) both have fabulous back stories worth reading up on. (Book recommended by H.E. Elin Suleymanov, Azerbaijani ambassador to the U.S., in CN Traveler.)
